Blyde River Canyon | Days 4, 5 and 6

As we head towards the Blyde River Canyon, towering cliffs emerge and rivers carve their way through the earth. Welcome to one of the largest “green canyons” on Earth -- and one of South Africa's most spectacular natural wonders.

Our accommodation is a beautiful guesthouse positioned within the lower canyon, hidden away at the meeting point of the Northern Drakensberg mountains and the lush, warm, savanna-style bush.

The Kiepersol Valley is one of South Africa’s farming jewels. The area is famed for its avocado groves, macadamia orchards and award-winning coffee.

Kruger National Park South, Mpumalanga | Days 10, 11 and 12

The southern reaches of the Kruger National Park have captured imaginations for generations, inspiring explorers, writers and naturalists alike. This is the landscape immortalised in Jock of the Bushveld, and it’s a landscape worth savouring first-hand. 

Your home is in a private concession deep within the park itself. Positioned between the Biyamiti and Mitomeni river systems, this exclusive pocket of wilderness offers a rare privilege: the opportunity to experience the Kruger without the crowds that often define it. Vilanculos | Days 13, 14, 15

Now, our epic exploration of Africa ramps up a gear. We’ll take a short flight to neighbouring Mozambique for the next leg of our journey. Yes, after days spent beside the golden tones of the bush, we arrive in Vilanculos, with its dazzling turquoise water and powder-white sandbanks. 

The flight is a short, regional air link that takes you from the bush to the beach in no time at all. Once you’ve arrived, you’ve broached the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago: a marine wilderness of shifting tides with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Africa.

Throughout the day, brilliant sapphire waters transform into shades of aquamarine and turquoise as vast sandbanks emerge and disappear beneath the ocean's surface. From your elevated vantage point above Kingfisher Bay, the panorama feels almost Mediterranean in character, yet remains unmistakably African.

Your home away from home is perched on a secluded coastal headland overlooking the archipelago. Intimate in scale and designed for privacy, it feels more like a private seaside estate than a traditional hotel. Whitewashed architecture, expansive terraces and uninterrupted ocean views create an atmosphere of complete calm. Here, the rhythm of the tides becomes the rhythm of daily life.

A short, effortless flight to Richards Bay airport will bring us to the doorstep of our next destination. We’ll then make the rest of the scenic journey by car, crossing into the rare, subtropical ecosystem of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. 

Here, ancient sand forests, vast estuarine waterways, coastal dunes and subtropical wilderness converge to create a landscape unlike any other on the continent. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a place of remarkable biodiversity and quiet natural beauty.

For the next leg of the journey, we head south along the coast to Umhlanga Rocks, one of KwaZulu-Natal's most desirable coastal enclaves with pockets of remarkable natural beauty.

Your home away from home is hidden within one of these quiet pockets. Surrounded by indigenous coastal vegetation and completely removed from the bustle of the promenade, this intimate boutique retreat offers privacy and comfort.

Underberg, Southern Drakensberg, | Days 22, 23 and 24

The town of Underberg lies in wait. Situated in the Southern Drakensberg, vast basalt cliffs dominate the horizon. Your home away from home is an elegant country manor positioned beneath the imposing Giant's Cup peak. Spacious suites overlook manicured gardens and distant mountain silhouettes, while roaring fireplaces, fine dining and warm hospitality create an atmosphere of complete comfort.

Plettenberg Bay | Days 25, 26 and 27

Plettenberg Bay occupies a privileged position between ocean, river and forest, where pristine beaches give way to sheltered wetlands and ancient yellowwood valleys. 

You’ll be staying in a prestigious lodge on the banks of the Bitou River, far removed from the bustle of the town itself. Individually designed suites, eclectic African artefacts and sweeping wetland views set the scene.

As fish eagles call overhead and the river winds silently towards the sea, it's easy to settle into the slower rhythm that defines this corner of the Garden Route.

The town itself rewards curiosity, and we have wonderful experiences in store. You might opt for a private marine safari where, depending on the season, dolphins, whales and Cape fur seals are making their home in Plett’s waters. Alternatively, you may prefer to remain on land and explore the Robberg Peninsula. Your guide will explain the stone-age archaeological history of the caves that pop up along the route, and point out Cape fur seal colonies playing below. It’s a wonderful, restorative walk. 

Back at the lodge, there is always time to slow down. Evenings unfold around beautifully prepared seasonal cuisine, where homegrown produce, local ingredients and the flavours of the Garden Route take centre stage.

On departure day, we'll stop in the town of Knysna, where we'll take a leisurely stroll around Thesen Island. Once the centre of Knysna's timber industry, this beautifully restored island now blends maritime heritage with boutique galleries, artisan shops and waterfront walkways.

A relaxed seafood lunch follows, before we return to the road, climbing over the Outeniqua Mountains towards the Klein Karoo. Along the way, there’s time to stop at Herold Wines, whose distinctive terroir is not to be missed.

Oudtshoorn | Days 28, 29 and 30

We now leave the coast and head into the heart of the gorgeous Klein Karoo. Surrounded by the towering Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges, Oudtshoorn is a region of olive groves, vineyards and historic homesteads. And, not to mention, the ostrich capital of the world. 

You’ll be staying in a beautifully restored 1850s country house. Spacious suites, fine antiques and attentive hospitality create an atmosphere of complete comfort, while the restaurant is famed for its fine dinners (it boasts a two or three-course table d’hote menu with fresh seasonal produce that changes daily). 

One of the highlights of your stay is a full-day exploration of the Swartberg Pass (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with a specialist guide. You'll discover the ways of the ancient Khoi-Attakwa people and encounter rare mountain fynbos. A leisurely lunch in the historic village of Prince Albert and a return journey through the spectacular gorges of Meiringspoort complete an unforgettable day in the mountains.

Back in the valley, another morning is devoted to the fascinating story of Oudtshoorn's “Ostrich Feather Boom”. Accompanied by a knowledgeable estate host, you'll discover how this once-remote Karoo settlement became one of the wealthiest towns in South Africa during the late nineteenth century, when ostrich feathers were among the world's most sought-after luxury goods. Historic homesteads were built by these “feather barons”, and were dubbed “Feather Palaces”. This remarkable chapter of South African history will be brought vividly to life.

Before we continue onwards, we'll follow the legendary Route 62 west through the Klein Karoo. Look forward to a port wine tasting in Calitzdorp followed by lunch in Barrydale, as the road carries us through mountain passes, open farmland and changing valley landscapes. By late afternoon, we arrive in Robertson, where the rugged grandeur of the Langeberg Mountains meets the vineyards of the Breede River Valley.

Robertson | Days 31, 32 and 33

Sheltered by the Langeberg Mountains, Robertson lies at the heart of the Breede River Valley. Known as the Valley of Wine and Roses, this is a quieter alternative to the Cape's better-known Winelands, where vineyards, farmland and mountain scenery create an atmosphere that feels wonderfully removed from the crowds. Chardonnay and Cap Classique are particular specialities here, but the appeal lies just as much in the relaxed rhythm of the valley itself.

Your home for the next three nights is an intimate boutique retreat combining historic character with the elegance of a classic wine-country hotel. Individually curated rooms, lush gardens and peaceful outdoor spaces provide plenty of opportunities to slow down, while excellent dining allows evenings to unfold without any need to venture further afield.

One morning takes us onto the Breede River itself. A privately chartered vessel carries you gently through the valley, with vineyards, farmland and the Langeberg Mountains unfolding around you. On departure day, we leave the Breede River Valley and turn west towards the Cape Winelands. The road carries us through the dramatic Du Toitskloof mountain corridor before descending towards Paarl, where we'll pause for coffee amongst the historic streets of one of South Africa's oldest towns. From here, it is a relaxed final journey into Franschhoek, where vineyards, Cape Dutch homesteads and the surrounding mountains signal the beginning of our next home base.

Franschhoek | Days 34, 35 and 36

We now arrive in the Cape Winelands. Franschhoek is one of the most beautiful regions of South Africa. Vineyards stretch across the valley floor, historic Cape Dutch homesteads sit amongst manicured gardens, and a rich agricultural heritage continues to shape daily life. 

You’ll be staying amongst the vineyards: a peaceful retreat removed from the bustle of the town itself. Look forward to exceptional hospitality and one of the finest dining experiences available in South Africa.

Franschhoek invites discovery in many forms. Chosen between a private visit to Everard Read art gallery with a senior curator at your side, or a guided walk through the Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve (where the extraordinary biodiversity of the Cape Floral Kingdom is on full display). 

Another morning is devoted to the remarkable history that shaped Franschhoek itself. Accompanied by a local expert, you'll hear about the arrival of the French Huguenots more than three centuries ago. 

Yet there is always time to slow down. A leisurely lunch beneath the oaks, an afternoon spent exploring the village's galleries and boutiques, or simply time spent at your luxury accommodation. As evening falls on your final night of this home base stay, you'll enjoy a seasonal tasting menu that celebrates the produce, wines and traditions of the valley.

Departure day begins with a private cellar tour and tasting at a wine farm with views of the gorgeous Stellenbosch mountains in this distance. From here, there’s lunch overlooking the vineyards. 

Cape Town | Days 37, 38, 39 and 40

Cape Town is a fitting end to our North-South epic. It’s one of the most spectacular cities in the world, famed for its dramatic natural scenery and world-class gastronomy. 

You’ll stay in a characterful boutique sanctuary perched high above the city. Panoramic views give you a wonderful look at the city -- the ideal setting in which to reflect on the journey while discovering one final corner of South Africa.

And what a city it is. Look forward to a private tour of Table Mountain as you bypass the queues and ascend to the summit via the cableway. Up this high, the scale of Cape Town becomes apparent. Back at sea level, you can look forward to a stroll through the historic Company's Garden. 

Another day is devoted to the spectacular Cape Peninsula. Travelling in a classic AC Cobra, you'll follow one of the world's great coastal drives as the road hugs the Atlantic shoreline. The route traces the dramatic curves of Chapman's Peak Drive before continuing south towards Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. Towering cliffs, crashing waves and endless ocean horizons accompany you throughout the day, creating a memorable finale to your exploration of South Africa's landscapes.

Your final full day focuses on two of the Cape's enduring passions: heritage and wine. The morning begins in Kalk Bay, where independent galleries, bookshops and antique stores line the narrow streets of this historic fishing village. From here, the journey continues into the Constantia Valley, the birthplace of wine production in the Southern Hemisphere. A private cellar masterclass at Klein Constantia offers a rare opportunity to explore the story of the legendary Vin de Constance, one of the world's most historic wines.
