For most of the year, the Cederberg feels elemental, impersonal, harsh. You have the dry crags of the sandstone rock; the arid air; the patchwork of trees and shrubbery.
Then, almost without warning, the land softens. Winter rainfall (May to August) marks the change. By September, the craggy outcrops of sandstone rock are covered in wildflowers. As far as the eye can see, daisies, bulbs and other wildflowers are in bloom.
What produces this spectacular wildflower display?
- The winter rain cycle. The Cederberg is a low rainfall area, with the notable exception of May-August, when a huge amount of rainwater falls, laying the foundations for this flower display.
- The dry spring weather helps further. As the rain subsides and spring takes hold, temperatures rise and the flowers start to bloom.
- Diverse topography. Because the terrain is so varied, many different types of flowers grow in the area.
The Experience
The experience will be led by a knowledgeable specialist intimately familiar with the area; a guide who will help you identify the flowers in the bloom, and explain the way the flowers follow the topography of the land. Remember: this is the epicentre of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and home to species of flower you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
